Congratulations to Lisa (BSc Hons student), Nduka (PhD candidate and mentor), Chad (Former undergraduate research assistant in Kerton group – now at MUN medical school) and Uttam (Former MSc student, now PhD candidate at UOttawa). Also, thank you to Louise Dawe for her continued X-ray crystallography collaborations with our groups.
The paper is titled “Coupling of Carbon Dioxide with Neat Propylene Oxide Catalyzed by Aminebisphenolato Cobalt(II)/(III) Complexes and Ionic Co-catalysts” and has been accepted for publication in Catalysis Communications (published by Elsevier). Well done everyone!
Chris Kozak is vice-chair and webmaster for the 2012 Atlantic Inorganic Discussion Weekend (AIDW 2012). This annual conference is being held at University of Prince Edward Island on March 23-25.
MUN GCCG students – speak to Chris and Fran if you want to attend.

An early welcome to Dalal Alhashmialameer! She is joining our group in January from Saudi Arabia having completed an English language course at Memorial. Her PhD will be co-supervised with Karen Hattenhauer. Good luck in your studies and research, Dalal!
Also, thank you to our MUCEP students this semester: Jessica, Jennifer and Landon. Thank you for all your work in the lab.
Also, thank you to Hassan, Zhenzhong and Kamrul for all their help during their PhD studies. We wish you all luck in your future careers and continued success in research.
Zhenzhong’s full paper (8 pages) titled “Simple copper/TEMPO catalyzed aerobic dehydrogenation of benzylic amines and anilines” has been accepted for publication in Org. Biomol. Chem., DOI:10.1039/C2OB06670J. It should be available online soon.
Chris Kozak and his collaborator Mike Shaver at UPEI have recently submitted a patent application for iron catalysts and their use in C-C cross-coupling and controlled radical polymerization. The work is being evaluated for further development and partnerships through GreenCentre Canada, MUN and UPEI.
Zhenzhong’s research on alcohol oxidation catalysis has been accepted for publication in Applied Catalysis A: General (published by Elsevier). Congratulations to him!
Fran participated in the colloque la chimie verte durable in Anjou, QC on Wednesday Nov. 16th. It was a very stimulating meeting – primarily in French (so Fran got to ‘wake up’ the French part of her brain). She has come away with many useful contacts and ideas for future collaborations. It was a unique and exciting meeting with lots of enthusiastic chemistry researchers and green/sustainable chemistry supporters.
Hassan successfully defended his PhD thesis yesterday. Congratulations Hassan! and thank you to everyone who turned out to support him.

Chris has been awarded the 2011 Terra Nova Young Innovator Award! Congratulations!
Prof. Phil Jessop (Queen’s University, Kingston, ON) visited the department yesterday, gave a talk on switchable surfactants and spent some time with our group. We’ve already had lots of great feedback from students and faculty – so even more new ideas and uses for switchable materials are on the horizon. Thank you Phil!
Many of the group will be attending the IYC/Chemistry Week event “Caffeinating with Chemists” at the Rocket on Water Street in St. John’s this evening. Fran will be giving a short presentation on Green Chemistry subtitled ‘It’s not easy being green or is it?’
