A bumper number of students from the MUN Green Chemistry and Catalysis Group took part in the CSC this June in Montreal. Chris and Fran took them out to Modavie for a celebratory lunch. Well done to Kamrul, Rebecca, Justin, Elliott, Hassan, Khaled, Zhenzhong, Nduka, Marcus, Lisa, Michelle and Christina on their posters and oral presentations. You made a great impression on everyone you met!
Chris Kozak is the Inorganic Chemistry Exchange national Chair/Coordinator. Visit www.inorganicchemistryexchange.ca for more information. Chris, Fran and our ICE student Stephanie traveled to Montreal for the workshop in late August. Stephanie gave a fantastic talk on her Al chemistry. Well done Steph! After, all the talks were done – we went to Trois Brasseurs to celebrate.
…to Rebecca Dean (Kozak Group) and Khaled Omari (Kerton Group) on their poster prizes at the Sustainable Chemistry Summit this past weekend. The MUN Green Chemistry and Catalysis group won 2 of the 3 prizes available.
This meeting organized by GreenCentre Canada will be held for the 2nd time in 2013. We are already looking forward to it. It was a fantastic experience and a chance to meet not only other University researchers but those from industry, entrepeneurs, tech-transfer specialists, NGO and government reps, consultants….the list goes on. Thank you GreenCentre for organizing this.
Here is a video that was produced in the run-up to this meeting and it tells you a little bit about Green Chemistry:
Welcome to all our new graduate students:
Jenna Flogeras (PhD Candidate, Kerton group), Yi Liu (MSc Candidate, Kerton group), Qing He (MSc Candidate, Kerton Group)
Katalin Pressing-Devaine (MSc Candidate, Kozak group), Hua Chen (MSc Candidate, Kozak group), Ray Roy (MSc Candidate, Kozak group)
Also, welcome back to our honours students: Lisa, Marcus and Michelle
Thank you and good luck to all our summer research assistants. Congratulations to Stephanie on her presentation at the ICE workshop at Université de Montréal, and to Nduka, Lisa and Jenn. S on their EJIC paper.
UPDATE: Congratulations to Hassan on his recently accepted paper in Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis.
Zhenzhong and Nduka have recently returned to St. John’s after the extremely rewarding experience of attending the ACS summer school on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Energy. They advanced their knowledge of the field and made many new friends and contacts in the area. Congratulations to them on their participation.
- Nduka receiving his certificate from Mary Kirchoff
- Zhenzhong and Mary with his certificate
Our group now has the following members:
Kerton Graduate Students: Hassan Kalviri, Zhenzhong Hu, Nduka Ikpo, Samantha Payne, Khaled Omari and Ali Elkurtehi

*** May 27, 2011: Congratulations to Marcus on his inorganic poster prize at APICS ChemCon last weekend! ***
Congratulations to Stephanie Barbon, Marcus Drover, Michelle Pratt and Lisa Saunders on their NSERC USRA awards. Stephanie is joining our group for the summer from the University of Western Ontario through the Inorganic Chemistry Exchange (ICE) program.
Also, welcome to Ali Elkurtehi who is joining the group as a PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr. Kerton
The Equipment/Facilities page for the group has been updated (at last) – we still plan on making a little video for you over the summer 😀
Congratulations to Chris Kozak on the renewal of his NSERC Discovery Grant for 5 years. His students are investigating (i) Catalytic transformations using Fe catalysts and (ii) CO2 as a chemical feedstock. Well done Chris! Time to celebrate 🙂
Also, Chris and Justin attended the AIDW in Fredericton (organized by UNB) – they had a fantastic time and learnt about a lot of exciting chemistry going on in the region.
Christina gave her 490B presentation and is nearing completion of her honours project. Good luck in your future career, Christina!
