Federal and Provincial politicians including Premier Dwight Ball and Minister Judy Foote were at the University to making an important announcement regarding the new core science facility (building), which is on schedule to open in 2019. More information can be found in Memorial’s gazette newspaper. Chemistry will be one of the department’s moving into the new building with new research and teaching laboratory space.
Chris Kozak (Professor of Catalysis, Department of Chemistry) was asked to say a few words about the impact that this will have on science faculty and students. A photo of Chris with Premier Ball, Minister Foote and Memorial’s President Kachanoski is shown below.

Fran Kerton and Chris Kozak were both interviewed by Kelly Foss yesterday for an article in the gazette about the new building.

MUN profs and students at Science Atlantic ChemCon. Thank you MSVU for a great conference
We are all just back from travels in the Maritime provinces of Canada. The Profs (Chris Kozak and Fran Kerton) attended Science Atlantic ChemCon hosted by Mount Saint Vincent University – along with Mike Katz, Chris Flinn and many of our undergraduates. Memorial will be hosting next year – so do consider paying us a visit. Jen Murphy and Tim Anderson took part in the Canadian Chemical Crystallography Workshop also held in Halifax.
Then the big event followed – the 99th CSC in Halifax. Chris, Fran, Jen, Hart and Kaijie gave talks in the green chemistry symposium organized by Chris Kozak and Rob Singer. Tim, Kaijie and Hart also presented posters during the conference. Above are two photos from this conference. Jen Murphy and Kaijie Ni won talk/journal prizes from Green Chemistry and Catalysis Science & Technology. On our last night, we headed to the Halifax Ale House to celebrate our #ChemFam with honorary group member Dr. Louise Dawe from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Congratulations to all members of the group who were recognized at the 2015/16 Graduate Studies Award Ceremony. Yi Liu (PhD candidate), Kata Devaine-Pressing (PhD candidate) and Kaijie Ni (PhD candidate) were recognized as Fellows of the School of Graduate Studies (and are pictured below with Fran and Chris). Former group members Coralee Ridder and Valerie Parsons were recognized as Fellows in absentia because they are working in industry and could not attend. Erika Butler and Jochen Koerner were recognized for their prestigious scholarships (an NSERC CGS-M and a Royal Bank Fellowship for Marine Studies respectively).
Well done everyone!

Ali’s paper on the synthesis and characterization of vanadium amino-phenolate complexes and their reactivity in oxidation catalysis is now available online: http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/ejic.201600068

Thank you to Louise for the X-ray work and Andrew (SWASP student) for his assistance in the lab. Thanks also to the editors and referees of this paper. It is great to see it online 🙂

We had a special visitor in our lab yesterday. Jennifer Murphy (PhD Candidate, Kerton Group) was interviewed by ‘The Broadcast’ on CBC radio about her research on NL mussels. We don’t know when her story will be heard on the air yet. However, we are excited to hear it and very proud of her.

The Kerton group’s 2014 paper published in a special edition of Catalysis Science and Technology is in the top 10% of highly cited papers in the RSC’s Physical portfolio of journals. Congratulations to Qing and all other students involved.
This article was also featured in a special coffee table collection of articles to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Chemistry at the University of York (UK). Dr. Kerton was an assistant professor (junior lecturer) and Royal Society University Research Fellow there before coming to Memorial University Chemistry.
