Fran gave a well received lecture in the “Sustainable Aquaculture Technologies” symposium at OCEANS’14, which was held in our home city of St. John’s, NL. This is an annual conference organized by MTS (the marine technology society) and IEEE (Inst. of electronic and electrical engineering) OES (Oceanic Engineering Society). The day began early with a speakers breakfast at 7:00 am in the conference centre and ended with the change to mix-mingle and exchange business cards with the other speakers in her session. She was also interviewed by the CBC fisheries broadcast about the group’s research, and how a chemist could become involved in aquaculture. Via the link above, you can catch Fran at about 8:00 min in

Our research group is busy trying to make fish and seafood waste into something else – hopefully one day we will turn it into something more valuable. Nowadays, when we have finished eating a shrimp or crab dish – the shells go into the trash and off to a landfill site. With space in landfills becoming less readily available, we can try to turn our waste into something else. In our case, this something else is a new chemical building block that we could turn into a new disease-fighting drug or into a new plastic. Chemicals are all around us in daily life (including the parts of this computer that I am using to write this blog post). To me it seems obvious to take one problem, waste, and to use it to solve another problem, making the objects we need and use everyday. In this way, we can all live a little bit more sustainably and take better care of our planet.

Dr. Kerton enjoying Singapore’s famous chili crab earlier this year – where did those shells go? probably to landfill

As the summer of research draws to a close, we are sad to say goodbye to our undergraduate summer students but as one season finishes a new one begins. We are happy to welcome Cosima and Immanuel to our group. They are here through the DAAD RISE Weltweit/Worldwide program. We hope they enjoy their time with us. We will also soon be welcoming Tim to the group, as a graduate student. Tim completed his BSc(Hons) at Mt.Allison University in Sackville, NB. He conducted research with Prof. Glenn Briand.
Also, welcome to Heather Manuel, who will begin her PhD in Environmental Science (co-supervised with Bob Helleur), and Brandon Furlong, who is conducting his 490 (honours) research with Fran.
