Xin Qian (M.Sc. in the Kozak group) has been notified that she is a finalist in the 2013 Reaxys PhD Prize! Having completed her M.Sc. at MUN, Xin is pursuing a PhD at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris (with Corinne Gosmini) and will begin a PDF in the Department of Materials at Oxford University in October. Congratulations Xin!
Congratulations to Lisa Saunders (former SWASP student in the Kerton group, USRA and Honours student in the Kozak group) for being awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship for her research in Cathy Crudden’s group at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON.
Congratulations also to Dr. Zhenzhong Hu (PhD student supervised by Dr. Kerton) for being awarded an FQRNT Bourse de recherche postdoctorale (postdoctoral fellowship) for his research in Parisa Ariya’s group at McGill University in Montreal, QC.

Chris Kozak and Fran Kerton attended Science Atlantic’s ChemCon last week where Jen Murphy (Honours project supervised by Dr. Dawe and Dr. Kerton) won a prize for her talk and Yi Liu (PhD Candidate, Kerton group) got a prize for her poster. This week they are attending the CSC in Quebec City. They are organizers of the symposium Green Chemistry II: Catalysis – we have 12 invited speakers from as far afield as England (Charlotte Williams), Scotland (Steve Nolan), Japan (Kenichiro Itami) and Singapore (Ning Yan), and many contributed talks too. They are also involved with several events/meetings tied in with their roles as part of the inorganic division executive. Next week, they are traveling up river to attend the Sustainable Chemistry Summit in Montreal. It will be time for a vacation when that is over 🙂

Need for alternative marine lubricants
Polyisobutene is used as a lubricant in ships’ engines but as it is non-biodegradable it can cause problems for wildlife if it is accidentally spilled. Green chemistry could be used to try and find alternatives for this chemical

We are now proud owners of www.greenchemistrynewfoundland.ca
Please let everyone know 🙂
The Green Chemistry and Catalysis Group are very happy to welcome Jeremy O’Brien, Cody O’Brien, Rebecca Quilty and Kelly Mitchelmore to the group for the summer. They have all just completed their 2nd year at MUN and are either enrolled in the biochemistry or chemistry programs. We also welcome Rebecca O’Leary who is a student at McGill University and is volunteering with our group this summer.
We hope you all enjoy your first summer of research……and that you find the thrill of new discoveries as exciting as we know it is 🙂
