Green Chemistry @ MUN

Congratulations to Lisa, Michelle and Sarah on their paper!

A paper describing the collective work of three undergraduates in the Green Chemistry and Catalysis Group has been accepted for publication in the journal Polyhedron. The work was done by Lisa Saunders (who is headed for grad school at Queen’s U.) during a USRA project, Michelle Pratt during a MUCEP work term (who is starting at MUN medical school this September) and Sarah Hann, who was employed as a summer research assistant in the group and is currently a med. student at MUN.

The paper is entitled: “Structural Variations in the Coordination Chemistry of Amine-bis(phenolate) Cobalt(II/III) Complexes” and should appear on-line shortly. Thanks to Lisa, Michelle and Sarah for their hard work on these capricious cobalt complexes, and to Andreas Decken (UNB Crystallography Service) and Louise Dawe (C-CART XRD lab) for their expertise. Jenna and Khaled have just returned from Golden, Colorado where they attended the Summer School. They had an amazing experience, despite delays with flights when trying to get there. They have learned a lot of useful information, which they can apply to their research, and have made lots of useful contacts for the future. They also presented posters on their research. Good job representing the MUN green chemistry group 😀

Thank you and congratulations to Marcus Drover (Mr. April) for having his entry selected for inclusion in the first calendar prepared by the inorganic division of the CSC. It is available for download in pdf format, if you click HERE!  We hope that future students will submit entries and also be selected for inclusion – what a great artistic way to tell the world about your chemistry research!

CSC (Canadian Chemistry Conference) in Calgary

Chris, Fran, Khaled and Nduka have been enjoying the science and Albertan hospitality at the CSC

Chris and Fran spoke in the metal-mediated polymerization symposium organized by Mike Shaver and Paul Hayes. Nduka presented his poster in the same symposium on Sunday evening and Khaled presented his poster in the Industrial division on Monday night.

Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers for a fantastic meeting.

Chris appears on Rogers TV “Out of the Fog”

Chris was interviewed on the Rogers TV St. John’s local television program “Out of the Fog” yesterday. The segment discussed the problems with currently used plastics and how biodegradable and renewably-sourced plastics, such as those being investigated in the MUN Green Chemistry Group, may be able to address some of the long term environmental issues.

Khaled and Jess’ research in the April top ten!

Congratulations to Khaled on his Departmental Seminar yesterday.

He received two bits of exciting news today:

1) His research on the production of levulinic acid and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural has made it into the top ten most accessed articles in Green Chemistry for April 2012.

2) His full paper on the formation of an amidofuran from N-acetyl D-glucosamine has been accepted for publication in the prestigious journal ChemSusChem. (Impact Factor, 6.3). In this work, we note that the presence of main-group elements (B & Cl) in your feedstock can have a significant effect on the reaction outcomes.

Also, congratulations to Linda (one of our DAAD RISE summer researchers who visited our group in summer 2011) – who is a co-author on the ChemSusChem paper.

Several undergraduates with connections to the Green Chemistry & Catalysis Group have attended ChemCon at Cape Breton University, which ends today.

My spies tell me that all Memorial students had a great time and gave fantastic presentations. In particular, congratulations to Marcus Drover on his Sepracor award for best overall presentation by an undergraduate. This award comes with funding to attend the CSC next year in Quebec.

Also, ChemCon will be hosted by Memorial University next year!

Congratulations Rebecca, Nduka and Khaled for their “Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies” awards. All three students are in the process of writing their theses in the Green Chemistry and Catalysis Group.  This award from the School of Graduate Studies is competitive and comes in recognition of continued academic excellence throughout their program. Well done!

Here Comes Summer!

Congratulations to Marcus, Lisa and Michelle on completing their BSc.(Hons) degrees. Marcus and Lisa have been awarded NSERC postgraduate scholarships and will be heading off to graduate school in September.

Welcome Jen and April! They are funded for summer research through the Faculty of Science Summer Undergraduate Research Awards (SURA). Jen is working with Dr. Kerton and Dr. Dawe on a coordination chemistry and catalysis project, and will hopefully have the opportunity to learn hands-on X-ray crystallographic methods.  April is working with Dr. Kozak and Dr. Bottaro on a mass spectrometry and catalysis project – hopefully April will enjoy her first research experience.

Dr. Kerton and Dr. Kozak are still on sabbatical in the UK but have lots of travels planned for the conference season. The first is the CSC in Calgary, which Khaled and Nduka (4th year Phd students, Kerton group) will also attend.

Here’s hoping for a successful, research-filled summer!
