Zhenzhong’s full paper (8 pages) titled “Simple copper/TEMPO catalyzed aerobic dehydrogenation of benzylic amines and anilines” has been accepted for publication in Org. Biomol. Chem., DOI:10.1039/C2OB06670J. It should be available online soon.
Chris Kozak and his collaborator Mike Shaver at UPEI have recently submitted a patent application for iron catalysts and their use in C-C cross-coupling and controlled radical polymerization. The work is being evaluated for further development and partnerships through GreenCentre Canada, MUN and UPEI.
Zhenzhong’s research on alcohol oxidation catalysis has been accepted for publication in Applied Catalysis A: General (published by Elsevier). Congratulations to him!
Fran participated in the colloque la chimie verte durable in Anjou, QC on Wednesday Nov. 16th. It was a very stimulating meeting – primarily in French (so Fran got to ‘wake up’ the French part of her brain). She has come away with many useful contacts and ideas for future collaborations. It was a unique and exciting meeting with lots of enthusiastic chemistry researchers and green/sustainable chemistry supporters.
Hassan successfully defended his PhD thesis yesterday. Congratulations Hassan! and thank you to everyone who turned out to support him.

Chris has been awarded the 2011 Terra Nova Young Innovator Award! Congratulations!
Prof. Phil Jessop (Queen’s University, Kingston, ON) visited the department yesterday, gave a talk on switchable surfactants and spent some time with our group. We’ve already had lots of great feedback from students and faculty – so even more new ideas and uses for switchable materials are on the horizon. Thank you Phil!
Many of the group will be attending the IYC/Chemistry Week event “Caffeinating with Chemists” at the Rocket on Water Street in St. John’s this evening. Fran will be giving a short presentation on Green Chemistry subtitled ‘It’s not easy being green or is it?’
Hassan Kalviri and Zhenzhong Hu have been recognised as Fellows of the School of Graduate Studies. Congratulations to them both on their achievement and recognition for their hard work.
A bumper number of students from the MUN Green Chemistry and Catalysis Group took part in the CSC this June in Montreal. Chris and Fran took them out to Modavie for a celebratory lunch. Well done to Kamrul, Rebecca, Justin, Elliott, Hassan, Khaled, Zhenzhong, Nduka, Marcus, Lisa, Michelle and Christina on their posters and oral presentations. You made a great impression on everyone you met!
Chris Kozak is the Inorganic Chemistry Exchange national Chair/Coordinator. Visit www.inorganicchemistryexchange.ca for more information. Chris, Fran and our ICE student Stephanie traveled to Montreal for the workshop in late August. Stephanie gave a fantastic talk on her Al chemistry. Well done Steph! After, all the talks were done – we went to Trois Brasseurs to celebrate.
