Courtney Laprise had a wonderful time in Golden Colorado at the ACS Summer School on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Energy. Thank you to ACS PRF and all the tutors/organizers/lecturers/students for such an invaluable experience.
Hart Plommer, Dr. Kerton and Dr. Kozak attended the International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry 2018 in Florence, Italy, #ICOMC2018. We had a great time presenting our work, meeting up with old friends, making new friends and seeing inspiring talks incl. a plenary by Prof. Ben Feringa (#Nobelprize) with outstanding alkyl lithium chemistry. One of the benefits of our location on the far North-East coast of North America is that we have the shortest flights to Europe. St. John’s to London Heathrow is ~ 4 hours long….so very convenient for European conferences, travels and collaborations

Congratulations Kori Andrea! Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 2017/18 competition
Kori’s scholarship provides her with $50,000 per year to support her graduate studies in the Kerton group. She is investigating earth abundant catalysts for transformations of carbon dioxide.

Vanier scholarships consider three equally weighted selection criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health. They are open to all nationalities. The Department of Chemistry at Memorial now hosts 2 Vanier Scholars.

Kori has demonstrated research potential through her varied undergraduate program and experiences at Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia (including a summer spent in Germany sponsored by DAAD). She is an advocate for #WomenInSTEM and she is currently supervising two WISE-SSEP NL students in our labs. She has written two full papers on her research at Memorial to date and a third is at an advanced stage of preparation. Congratulations again Kori! We are looking forward to supporting you in your research and ambitions over the next few years, and can’t wait to see where you end up! You are a science superstar 😀

Center for Green Chemistry & Green Engineering at Yale hosted a student video competition at the 22nd Green Chemistry & Engineering conference in Portland, Oregon.
The videos are available on their website and are a great resource to use for educational purposes and spread knowledge and awareness about sustainable chemistry.
Juliana Vidal (PhD Candidate, Kerton group) entered the contest and described her personal journey to become a green chemist. She received an honorable mention. Congratulations Juliana!

The Green Chemistry Group and Prof. Meldrum (Job Lecturer 2018) learned about early Newfoundland history and archaeology on Tuesday afternoon. We visited Colony of Avalon and spent time taking in the artifacts in the interpretation centre, talking with the guide, scientists and historians in the archaeology lab, and visiting the excavated sites, and the model 17th century kitchen. We were there for the #greatcolonialcookoff week 1 and got to try “Tea with Eggs“, which surprisingly everyone enjoyed. It may have been because we needed to warm up after being outside in the #Juneuary weather.

This year it was 2 profs + 2 grad students at ChemCon from our group. Hopefully, we’ll have some undergrad students representing us at #ChemCon2019 in Acadia.
Saint Mary’s did an awesome job in organizing this event, which had a green chemistry theme with plenaries from John Warner and Philip Jessop…..and much more green chemistry and catalysis besides.
Congratulations to everyone involved from organizers to presenters and their supervisors 🙂

Jen Murphy (Ph.D. Candidate, Kerton group) has been working with mussels for the past few years – the first in a series of papers has just been published in Green Chemistry. We expect several more to follow in the coming months. Congratulations Jen!

Congratulations to our students ….those in attendance and those that could not attend on your awards presented this afternoon. Unfortunately, some of our students (and many colleagues) are at the CSC in Edmonton or even out of the country, but it was still a fun event! The Provost (Prof. Noreen Golfman) was on hand to give out the certificates whilst the Dean (Prof. Aimée Surprenant) was M.C. and hosted this great, annual event.
